Case Study

Our Strategy for Erecting and Dismantling a Tower Crane Safely

via Turner Construction

Our client, Turner Construction, needed assistance with the erection of the new covered seating area within Portland’s Providence Park. They also needed help with installing concrete structures at the park’s promenade level. We navigated a few challenges during this project, successfully erecting and dismantling large cranes within a limited space and achieving the project’s goals.

The Challenge

The biggest challenge we faced during this project pertained to space limitations. We had to work with tight site access, which meant strategically planning for safe crane erection and dismantling within a small area. Additionally, we had to navigate access challenges such as working with the local light rail system and bus lines and coordinating shared points of access with a local health club.

The Solution

We approached this project by breaking each phase down into smaller sections. First, we determined a strategy for erecting and dismantling the tower crane safely. Next, we needed RT support to keep the concrete phase moving while the Tower Crane served other functions. We also needed to determine how to use large crawler cranes from the field level to set the truss sections and infill the stadium seats made of precast concrete. Finally, we had to coordinate the use of our GMK 5275 to hoist ironworkers in a fixed man basket to make the field connections in the air.

The Outcome

We succeed in erecting the canopy and installing the new facilities safely and on time. One of our biggest wins was our ability to safely erect and dismantle the tower crane despite several limiting factors. Additionally, we were able to construct the canopy structure from the field level while maintaining a clear zone away from the underground stream beneath the stadium. We also safely and efficiently erected and dismantled large crawlers on the field level.
